Greetings Fellow Wrestling Enthusiast,
Welcome. I am excited to announce the beginning of the 3rd season (2009-2010) of the Dulles South Eagles Wrestling Club. We are a first-class sporting organization created to support the needs of the youth of the Southeast Loudoun County community. DSYS was initially stood up with Football as its initial offering – we are proud to say we were the first sport to align with the new DSYS organization.
Organization. Two years ago, the Dulles South Eagles Wrestling Club was chartered as the 29th club to join the Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (NVWF). That organization has been serving Northern Virginia since the early 1960’s when it was created with 4 clubs and 225 wrestlers. The organization now boasts 32 clubs and a projected 1,600(+) wrestlers. The NVWF is a very mature organization with the safe development of youth wrestlers as their #1 goal. The league will have a minimum 6 scrimmages (tournament style) and a season ending tournament.
We will conduct initial assessments of the youth wrestlers to identify the appropriate level for initial competition. The NVWF has two distinct levels of competition available, Advanced (A) and Beginner (B). For those who assess at an Elite level, we will have an affiliation with several other clubs that compete in the Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL). If you think your child is ready for elite level competition, please email me at the below listed address, as they will be starting practice earlier than our core program. We will also be tied closely with the Freedom High School developmental program, to ensure a smooth transition from the Youth to High School levels of competition. The High School coaches and wrestlers will even be involved and assisting with our program as time and schedule allows. We envision the Freedom High School coaches and wrestlers as mentors.
Commisioner & Head Coach. I want to take this opportunity to personally introduce myself, Bill Philbrick, as the commissioner of the Dulles South Eagles Wrestling Club. I am a former college wrestler (The Citadel, Military College of SC) and 20 year career Army officer. Mike Wallize, Former PA wrestler and Penn State Graduate will be assisting with Coaching responsibilities. Although we have a great core staff of coaches, we definitely welcome volunteers to help develop our youth. Our objective is not to try and make Olympians out of every child, but to make them aware of the value of athletics, nutrition, discipline, sportsmanship and friendly competition. We will stress the basics of wrestling, “the oldest sport known to man.” Several well known historical figures with wrestling backgrounds are: Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, George Patton (WW2 General) and Norman Schwarzkopf (Commanding General of the Persian Gulf War) We will equip all individuals with the foundation to continue development to higher levels of competition if desired.
***Note1: Additional Coaches and fellow committee members are needed.
Schedule. The program will begin in early November and run through the season ending tournament, currently scheduled for early March 2010. The first Federation event is currently scheduled for the weekend of December 12, 2009; there are earlier independent events for those desiring an early head start. Practices will be held at Freedom High School on Mondays & Thursdays from 6:30 - 7:30 (7-10 yr olds) & 7:30 - 9:00 PM (11-14 yr olds) with meets being held on Saturdays or Sundays. Practice schedules are subject to change based upon final coach and facility availability.
***Note 2: We understand that many kids are involved in fall sports and it is not unusual for people to begin practicing after Thanksgiving!
Registration. Registration will be held via the DSYS Website http://www.dullesyouth.com beginning on October 14, 2009. We are currently planning an organizational meeting for all Parents and Wrestlers for November 9th at 6:30; Freedom HS wrestling room. I will be available via email at:
. Initial registration fees are $135 and are commensurate with other clubs in our area.
